Fluoride and enamel strengthening PDF Print E-mail

The benefits of fluoride in preventing tooth
decay (caries) are well known and more is being
discovered every year as dental scientists continue
to investigate how this remarkable mineral
strengthens teeth and fights decay.

What causes tooth decay?
As one of the most common diseases in the world, tooth decay is widespread
in adults and children. It is estimated that 60% to 90% of school children have
tooth decay.

Tooth decay can occur if plaque - a sticky film made up of bacteria - is left on
teeth. Plaque forms on all tooth surfaces and can be difficult to thoroughly
remove from specific areas of the mouth, e.g. between the teeth and along the
gum line. If plaque accumulates, it causes the most damage. The tiny bacteria
that live in plaque feed on sugars in our diet to form acids, which attack enamel.

As vital minerals are lost, the crystalline enamel structure is softened at the
surface and the structure of the tooth below is weakened. This can lead to the
decay spreading and destroying the tooth from the inside out.

If untreated, the acids can continue to attack deep inside the tooth (in the root)
and can cause a deep cavity or abscess, which can be extremely painful and
may cause tooth loss.

How is fluoride incorporated in your oral hygiene routine?
Fluoride is a natural mineral found widely in the environment. There are also
a number of other ways that fluoride can be used to help protect teeth
against decay, for example, using fluoride-containing toothpaste.

Toothpastes and mouthwashes
Brushing your teeth for at least 2 minutes, at least twice a day with a fluoride
toothpaste can help prevent tooth decay. However, not all fluoride toothpastes
are the same and your dentist or hygienist will be able to advise about the
most suitable toothpaste formulation. Using a mouthwash that contains
fluoride may also be useful.

Young children should only use a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste
until they are about 6 and parents are advised to supervise brushing to
minimise swallowing.

Fluoride supplements
In some cases your dentist or physician may recommend use of fluoride
supplements for extra protection.

Water supply
Many countries add fluoride to the water supply. However, some water filters can
remove all traces of fluoride from the water, as can certain bottled waters, which
means your teeth may not benefit from the protection that fluoride in the water
supply offers.

If you have any questions about your oral health,
consult your dentist/dental hygienist.
