Information on Dental Crowns

By Jamie Workman

Many people experience problems with their natural teeth and require dental intervention to correct the problem. When a person's teeth become decayed, break, or wear down, they may need a dental crown to protect the existing tooth and improve the appearance of their smile. In addition to restorative dentistry treatments, dental crowns are also commonly used in cosmetic dentistry as a cap for dental implants.

Dental crowns are made in a laboratory using a variety of different materials. Materials used in dental crowns would include porcelain, porcelain bonded to metal, ceramics, and gold alloy. The material of the crown has a significant impact on the final appearance of the person's smile. For front teeth, patients may want the most natural result possible. For back teeth, most patients are less concerned about the material utilized to make their dental crown. Additionally, crown materials vary in cost and that can greatly influence a person's choice in crown material. Your dentist can explain these options in more detail and help you determine which material is best suited to your unique needs.

When a person needs a dental crown they will typically make several trips to the dentist to complete the process. During the first visit they will have an impression taken and a temporary crown will be placed.

When the crown is delivered to the dentist’s office one to two weeks following the initial visit, the patient will make a second appointment for placement. During that visit the crown will be fit over the tooth and sealed in place using dental cement. With a few days of placement the crown will not even be noticeable to the patient.

Dental crowns can last several years with good dental care. Your dentist will advise you of any special care measures needed based on the crown material and will continue to check on the strength of the crown during subsequent dental exams.

About the author:
Restorative dentistry can repair the functionality of your smile through the use of dental implants and porcelain dental crowns. A qualified dentist can evaluate your teeth and can recommend the best procedures to restore your smile.
